Health Message (April 05, 2025)

Good Sabbath Church Family,

Habits can be easily developed, and we want to develop good ones. Unfortunately, many of us get wrapped in the bad ones.

“The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.” – Samuel Johnson

On average, it makes more than two months before a new behavior becomes automatic--66 days to be exact—and how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances.

For better or for worse, our habits shape us. Breaking a bad habit ultimately is about rewiring your brain. Habits are found in an area of your brain called the basal ganglia.

The more often you perform an action or behave a certain way, the more it gets physically wired into your brain. This amazing adaptive quality of your brain is known as neuroplasticity. Your brain forms neuronal connections based on what you do repeatedly in your life—both good and bad.

Do you want to change your bad habits? Trust them to Jesus!

Sister White writes: “Through the power of Christ, men and women have broken the chains of sinful habit. They have renounced selfishness. The profane has become reverent; the drunken, sober; the profligate, pure. Souls that have borne the likeness of Satan have become transformed into the image of God. This change is, in itself, the miracle of miracles. A change wrought by the Word; it is one of the deepest mysteries of the Word. We cannot understand it; we can only believe, as declared by the Scriptures, it is “Christ in you, the hope of glory” - (Colossians 1:27).

May God bless your journey to good health,

Sandra Torres
