Health Message (March 06, 2026)

Good Sabbath Church!

How are you sleeping? Good sleep is essential for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Ellen G. White's writings contain valuable information about sleep (see below).

Sleep restores the nervous system. She wrote that "sleep is the best restorer of the nervous system."

Early sleep is more restorative. She stated that "one hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after it."and that "two hours' good sleep before twelve o'clock is worth more than four hours after twelve o'clock".

Sleep loss harms mental health. She noted that the brain "recuperates during sleep; if the recuperation does not equal the expenditure, the brain withers; this is insanity" and cited historical examples of sleep deprivation leading to severe mental deterioration.

People who do heavy mental work need more sleep. She emphasized that "those who think most... require most sleep" and that cutting sleep is "infallibly destructive to mind, body, and estate."

Ellen White's teachings on sleep are remarkably consistent with modern scientific understanding, especially considering the era in which she wrote. Her emphasis on: early sleep, adequate duration, mental restoration, the dangers of chronic sleep loss all match what neuroscience and sleep medicine now affirm.

This comes by no surprise to we who know that the Health Message was given to her from our Creator, Who gave us sleep for our daily restoration, because He is the mastermind behind of how the body functions at it's best.

"And the Lord of God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." Genesis 2:7

May God Bless Your Journey to Good Health,
