Fast Dopamine vs. Slow Dopamine
Dopamine-scrolling is the habit of scrolling on a screen in pursuit of stimulating, entertaining content. Dopamine is a powerful hormone that makes you want more and more of something-in this case, it makes you keep scrolling, even if it is not pleasurable.
Dopamine is a chemical neurotransmitter sent by the brain to the body for rewards and motivations, also known as the "feel-good" hormone. Fast dopamine provides instant, high-intensity rewards from activities such as social media scrolling, gaming, pornography, or online gambling. It's a temporary quick gratification, but it leads to addiction, diminished ability to enjoy activities, and crashes in motivation and mood.
Slow dopamine is delayed gratification. The slow dopamine comes from activities requiring effort, patience, and engagement-such as exercise, learning, or deep work. It results in improved mental health, increased motivation, sustained focus, and long-term fulfillment.
A handheld device is like a digital slot machine. The scrolling releases a small amount of dopamine. You continue to swipe in pursuit of a larger dose of dopamine from the occasional reward, such as "likes," comments, or engaging videos..
How to shift to slow dopamine: 1. embrace difficulty, things that are slightly difficult in the moment are rewarding later; 2. Reduce screen time to lower your need for online stimulation; and 3. Set goals that require focus and commitment, such as finishing a book or a work project.
A "tech Sabbath"(one day a week with no screens) can reduce screen cravings. As little as 1-3 days of digital detox can improve the brain's reward system.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
In Christ,
